Imagine people hanging on every word you utter?
Responding to your invitations?
Acting on Your Challenges?
Imagine being able to create breakthroughs and make a difference for other people?
I think that’s the best reason to be an entrepreneur! And my guess, the fact you’re reading this, that might be you!
But, most don’t have it or even know how, why or where they can get it! And instead too many find themselves inconsistent. Confident one moment. Then not confident or even fearful. Motivated for a time. Then not motivated and even tired.
There’s got to be a better way! And there is!
However, a pet peeve I see in so many trainings, teachings, or even leadership development programs - they teach tactics, tools or even strategies BUT miss the most important ingredient.
It’s what Jesus of Nazareth had in spades!
Most were never empowered with on how to attain THE KEY that made Jesus different from all the rest of the teachers of the day!
What did Jesus have that entrepreneurs (really any leader!) can’t do without?
Jesus had what others of his day didn’t have: AUTHORITY.
“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” (Matthew 7:28-29)” Jesus, whether you believe in Him or not can’t be dismissed as the biggest influencer in ALL of history. Into a world was a super underdog, he emerged as the ultimate leader. He:
Didn’t have political power
Didn’t have educational pedigree
Didn’t have personal wealth or funding
Didn’t have other leaders granting him access
What Jesus did have: AUTHORITY. And you and I can have that too!
Even if most don’t! Even if most won’t! And unless we decide to find it, define it, accept it and use that authority, we won’t have it.
HOWEVER: People respond to those with authority.
In fact, every study in human nature suggests that we as human beings almost can’t help responding to those with authority. For good. Or for bad.
The power of authority was powerfully demonstrated to me in college psych 101 class as a student at Cornell University. I will never forget , The infamous Stanley Milgrim (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment). As humans, most can’t help to listen to and respond to those who act with authority.
For the good, when you have and act with authority, others will feel it and respond.
What does it look like to have authority?
Jesus modeled these 5 things... and so must you!
1. You Know Your Purpose (WHY you're here )
Jesus could state WHY He came. He wasn’t flip flopping on why he was out doing anything in the first place.
“I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
Those who know WHY they’re here have authority. They’re focused and they’re able to share WHY they do what that what they do and why it matters.
2. You Know the Audience You’ve Come to Serve. (WHO You Serve)
"For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." Luke 19:10
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Luke 5:32)
Jesus certainly could have focused on plenty of audiences. He didn’t focus on the Roman emperor, the pagan masses or even the religious hoards. He focused on Jewish peasants for the most part.
And it worked! THEN even spread to Roman emperors (ex. Constantine), pagan masses (Gentiles) and eventually even religious elite leaders (Saul of Tarsus).
What audience will you focus on?
3. You Know and Believe Your Message (WHAT You Believe)
Jesus knew what He believed. He wasn’t wishy washy and waivering. He said things simply and powerfully even if it wasn’t what others saw as the accepted belief of the day.
“It has been said... but I tell you,” He would say.
“To those who have ears to hear, I tell you..”
People with authority know WHAT they believe. They’ve done their homework and they have their core convictions and won’t waiver on them.
4. Your Care To Serve Others is Greater Than Their Rejection (HOW You'll Persevere)
Even though Jesus had crowds throng to him, he had plenty of complainers and critics... even those who wanted him dead!
Those with authority are OK with getting “shot at” because they care so deeply about helping those who really need what they have to offer.
We just can’t be so emotionally attached to HOW they respond that we give quit sharing with those who will listen.
Jesus would teach, “for those who have ears to hear.” So must you
5. You Invite Others to Join (WHEN Things Will Multiply)
“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me... ?(Matthew 28:18) ... then Jesus invited others to make disciples. Do what he did!
Those with authority can empower others with authority. They then empower others to do what they do... That’s how movements are made!
What difference could it make if you had those 5 things each and every day as an entrepreneur!
