Wouldn’t we all want greater purpose in our lives? Meaning? A sense of significance. A bigger “why” amidst all our struggles and setbacks?
Sure, but for many, purpose feels like it’s either some “woo-woo” thing or only for a special few. Or a wealthy class who have leisure and brain space to ask such questions. The rest of us have to “earn uh livin.”
Hearing that I was going to speak on the topic of purpose last week, one middle age woman snarked, “You’re not going to be bringing that ‘Boulder’ spiritual weirdo stuff are you?” Gotta admit, she didn’t mince words!
But, if purpose really can unlock life, health, livelihoods and even extend longevity (as recent scientific and medical resarch studies demonstrate), who wouldn’t more purpose?
And spiritually, purpose lives inside all of us whether we recognize it or not.
It says in the wisdom section of the Bible, specifically Ecclesiastes 3:11 (AMP) ... “He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divine sense of purpose…]
We can’t dodge it! We long for purpose. And purpose longs for us!
HOWEVER- if you ask most people if they know their purpose, listen to their response. “Well, what do you mean by ‘purpose?’” “Um, well, uh, not really.” “I don’t have time to figure it out.”
Given, that, my friend, Richard Leider, the author and researcher known as the “Pope of Purpose,” says, “If you’re unsure of your purpose, I have a fill in for you.
It’s TO GROW. And TO GIVE.”
In other words, purpose need not be shrouded in some kind of impossible puzzle that’s yet to be revealed by some stroke of lighting, luck or spiritual life-quest. Purpose means you feel a sense of WHY in the midst of life’s whats. A reason to persevere when things get rough.
Yes, getting specific on purpose has benefits… but, do what I’ve done lately and encourage you to give a shot to: Try on “My purpose is to grow and to give.” See what happens. Even just for today.
Here’s how it works:
A challenge comes your way…
Grow: Ask, what can I learn from this? How will I better be able to solve this problem and navigate this situation? How am I being equipped for my future? Even my calling?
